1. Introduction
Welcome to the GeekLeaders.com community. Please browse through the ongoing
conversations related to technical management and leadership and add your voice
to the discussion.
Hopefully, theory and reality will collide here and we, as a
group, will be able to help each other make sense of the role and practice of
technical leaders.
2. What is GeekLeaders.com?
The goal of the community is to improve the understanding
and practice of technical leadership.
The means to this end are varied as you can read below, but
the primary approach is to harness the experience and wisdom of all the members of the
community to stimulate ongoing conversations and debates on topics related to
technical leadership and management.
What is the purpose of this site?
The purpose of the site is to facilitate conversations on
topics related to technical leadership.
Who started this thing?
Paul Glen is the founder and primary editor/facilitator of
the site. You can read more about me by
clicking here.
Who posts here?
Both featured writers who were invited by the editor and anyone who is a registered member of the community. In other words, you can, and I hope that you do.
How is it funded?
The majority of content on GeekLeaders.com is freely
available to the public.
Over time, GeekLeaders.com will be funded by a variety of
sources. At the outset, two have been
identified.
1. Relatively unobtrusive advertising banners will be added to
the site.
2. But the primary source of funding will be through the
Leadership Advantage Program, a premium offering of the site. Member individuals or groups pay a monthly
membership fee. Each week, subscribers
will receive an email with a link to a five minute webinar on a topic related
to technical leadership. You can read more about the program here.
3. Sections of the GeekLeaders.com Site
The GeekLeaders.com site is separated into several sections
that, hopefully, are fairly self-explanatory.
Over time, this will probably evolve as the community grows and we learn
how it is best used.
Frontpage
The frontpage is what you see when you first enter http://www.geekleaders.com into your
browser. The articles shown on the frontpage
are highlighted contributions, selected by the editor, but also appear in their
respective sections.
Weekly Webinars
Weekly Webinars is the menu name for the Leadership
Advantage Program, a premium offering of GeekLeaders.com. For more information, click here.
Articles
Articles are focused and coherent pieces related to
technical leadership. Typically, an
article can be read alone and do not require other articles to make sense. They are also usually at least 500 words in
length. They are posted within specific sections of the site (Careers, Competencies, humor, or Tips, Tools & Techniques).
Blogs
Blogs are user contributed articles on almost any topic of
interest. They are generally, but not
necessarily, short. They can be less formed thoughts than articles, but should still relate to technical leadership or the life of technical leaders.
Forums
Forums are for focused conversations. This is where you go to ask advice, see what
other people are talking about or start a conversation without writing a whole
article.
There are a number of forum areas currently defined for you
to post your questions and comments. If you
would like to see a new forum area set up, just click on the contact the editor
link in the Editorial Menu on the left side of the screen.
Weblinks
Weblinks are just what they sound like, a link to another
website or article on another site. They
are things that should be of interest to the readers of the site, not
commercials. They will be screened
before being posted.
4. Contributing to GeekLeaders.com
Only registered users may contribute to
GeekLeaders.com. Once your free
registration is completed and confirmed, you will be able to contribute.
